DENTISTRY

Our veterinarians performs daily dental procedures from a routine scale and polish to necessary tooth extractions.

Animals are given a thorough clinical examination before the procedure to make sure they are healthy.  Blood tests may be done, particularly in older animals, to determine if there are any underlying organ problems as this will influence our anaesthetic plan.

A qualified staff places the patient under anaesthesia and monitors them throughout the dental procedure and their recovery. We use an ultrasonic dental descaler to remove the plaque and tartar buildup from your pet’s teeth, just like human oral hygienists.  The descaler works by vibrating at very high speeds and is kept cool with a continuous stream of water. This water also helps to wash away the debris removed from the teeth.

Once the teeth are clean they will be assessed to see if there are any problems like gum recession and root exposure or even fractures of the teeth. At this stage it will be decided if any teeth need to be extracted.

When all the cleaning and extraction work is finished the teeth are polished with a high-speed dental polisher using special tooth paste. It is essential that this is done as the ultrasonic descaler makes microscopic scratches in the tooth enamel which, if not polished out, will be an excellent place for food and bacteria to start to building up again.  Some patients may be sent home with a course of antibiotic tablets and/or pain killers.
