EUTHANAZIA AND CREMATION

One of the saddest things of loving our animals is that their lifespan is so much shorter than ours. Possibly one of the hardest things you will ever have to do, is to make the decision to have your beloved pet euthanized. But as a responsible, caring pet owner it is sometimes the only choice left to prevent pain and suffering.

At Pretoria East Veterinary Clinic, we do understand the connections people have with their pets. Our doctor cannot make the decision for you but they are there to advise and support you. If you want to talk to the doctor about having your pet put to sleep please call in and make an appointment. Let the receptionist know why you are coming so they can try to book you at a quiet time.

Before you come, discuss with your family whether you want to cremate your pet or bury them at home. All pets left with us for cremation go to PawPrint, a dedicated pet crematorium in Irene, Centurion.  In addition to a standard cremation they offer a private cremation with return of your pet’s ashes. If you would like your pet’s ashes back please discuss the procedure and costs with the doctor or receptionist.

The actual euthanasia of the pet is a quiet and painless procedure. It is your personal choice if you would like to stay while the vet administers the drug. It is practice policy to place a catheter in the vein for all euthanasia so there can be no complications with administration of the drug. After this the nurse will hold your pet while the doctor administers the drug, which is a very highly concentrated anaesthetic.  As soon as the doctor starts to inject, your pet will become sleepy and start breathing slower. After just a few seconds all movement will stop. The doctor will listen for your pet’s heart beat to assure you that they have passed.
